Orthopedic Physical Therapy

What does an evaluation look like?

  1. History Taking - You have all the time you need to tell your story. Your therapist will ask questions to understand your situation and learn about the driving factors.

  2. Movement Assessment - Your therapist will have you perform a series of movements to better understand your current capabilities and patterns.

  3. Specific Testing - Strength, endurance, joint & muscle flexibility, balance, and motor control may be further tested to further clarify driving factors.

  4. Plan - Your therapist will explain their findings, make recommendations on how to address the driving factors, current pain, and how to improve your body’s overall movement capacity & resilience.

  5. Initial Treatment - Typically there is time to start initial treatment, be it hands-on work, exercise-based, or reviewing activity modifications.

You and your therapist are partners in this process. Your preferences regarding assessment and treatment are a very important component of the plan we develop! Some people love to lift heavy weights, while others may prefer a focus on bodyweight exercises and the use of bands for resistance. We will tailor your program to you!

How many treatment sessions should I expect?

Each therapy session is designed to be longer than most in-network rehab centers.  Longer sessions usually mean fewer and less frequent overall visits.  Most orthopedic patients come in 1 time for the first few weeks and then taper care to every other week or once every 3 weeks.  Understand that total visits depend on the severity, acuity, and chronicity of the condition you are receiving care for. If you are seeking care for multiple complex injuries or body regions, you may opt for more frequent sessions.

What if I don't have a physican’s referral?

We do not need a referral to start treatment.  New York is a direct access state.  This means that with a doctorate in physical therapy, your therapist is allowed to assess anyone to determine their need for care, treat you for 30 calendar days prior to getting a referral on file.
